May 2018 Book List

Books with Glasses big

I did not include all the interesting lists from editors, publisher’s and readers for Summer Reading suggestions but you might want to Google them. Some people like to choose a long and meaty selection that will occupy them for most of the summer, some people like lighter fare, such as romances or stories that happen near beaches, some want thrillers or detective stories. We are so rich in writers and good books that it should not be difficult to find something engrossing to read while you soak up sun (or lounge in dappled shade).

April 2018 Book List

book-club-recomendations

It’s spring although it won’t stop snowing, but more time to read before the garden demands attention. This book list seems a bit smaller than usual and, of course, there are titles that call out to me. Keep writing all our authors and we will keep reading. When it finally warms up take a book to the park.

November 2017 Book List

Books seem to be available so quickly that the topics authors have written about this month are still trending on social media and in the news. Some books are self-published and the turnaround on that can happen fast, but even books from publishers seem to arrive on the market faster than they once did. You will find lots of nonfiction titles in this list that talk about Russia and obviously the news is the source of interest for that subject. You will also find books that may have been timed to appear close to Halloween. And you will find new books by popular authors also in this lengthy book list. Once again, I will have to choose selectively for my future reading endeavors as there are too many titles to cover. This time I find myself attracted to some of the biographies and memoirs.

May 2017 Book List

The interesting trend I see in this new crop of books on my May 2017 Book List which covers (compiled from PW, Amazon, NYT) mid-March until the end of April is that I see more nonfiction titles than fiction titles. I wonder if all the difficulty we are experiencing in our politics separating real news from fake news, and fact from propaganda or outright lies is fueling a desire to read books that attempt to be based in fact. Another trend also relates to politics because, while our country is responding to the “America First” message and turning its back on globalism, writing is becoming more global than ever before as the nationalities of the published authors show. One constant: so many great books, so little time. I am reading from older lists right now and will not catch up to this list for some time. When I do catch up the novel American War by Omar El Akkad seems like it might suit my politics, sci-fi, apocalyptic tastes. What titles appeal to you?

books-big-3

I’m still reading but I am going through a slow phase with too much happening to allow for much peaceful book time. But I will still keep making myself (and you)  a book list each month because winter is coming and curling up in a chair and reading are favorite winter activities of mine. I have compiled a list that includes four sources: Amazon, Independent Booksellers, Publishers Weekly, and the New York Times. Each of these sources makes its list a bit differently, with Independent Booksellers being the most different (they do not base their list on what is being published, they base it on what their readers are buying).

June-July, 2016 Book List

books small 3

I usually publish my book lists around the 15th of each month, but my site was under construction and it scattered my wits and interrupted my schedule, so here is the list for both June and July and there are treasures in here and there is plenty of politics, mostly of the Conservative variety. I did not have the usual bulletins from Publishers Weekly, but the New York Times Book Review started arriving like clockwork. Is this like that saying that when one door closes another one opens? Of course, these lists produce both anticipation and anxiety. Which book/s will I love this time? How will I ever, ever get to all of these books? That’s life, full of the paradoxes.
